1. You

Use the same name and contact details as your resume. A suburb and state is enough.

2. The job

Copy the job title exactly as it's written in the ad. If the ad names a contact person, use their name: "Dear Priya" beats "To whom it may concern".

3. Why this job

One or two sentences on why this job and this employer. Mention something specific about them: what they do, where they are, or something in the ad that caught your eye.

4. Why you

Pick two or three things the ad asks for that you can show. For each, give a quick example: what you did and what happened. Numbers help ("served 150 customers a shift").

5. Close

Say you'd like an interview, when you can start, and thank them. Keep it short and confident.

How long should a cover letter be in Australia?

One page, usually three or four short paragraphs. Hiring managers skim, so lead with why you want the job and the two or three strengths that match the ad.

Do I need a different cover letter for every job?

Yes, at least the opening and the strengths. Keep a base version, then change the employer, the job title and the examples so they match each ad.

What if the job asks for selection criteria?

Answer each criterion separately, usually in a separate document, with a short example for each. Your cover letter can then stay brief and point to it.
