1. About you

Use the name you go by at work. A suburb and state is enough: employers don't need your street address, and an Australian resume never needs your date of birth, a photo or your marital status.

2. Summary

Two to four sentences: who you are, what you're good at, and the kind of work you want. Write it last, once the rest is done. Example: “Reliable and friendly team member with two years in hospitality. Calm under pressure and quick to learn new systems. Looking for a retail role with weekend hours.”

3. Skills

List 6 to 10 skills, one per line. Mix practical skills (cash handling, Microsoft Excel, forklift) with how you work (punctual, good with customers). Copy words from the job ad where they're true for you: many employers scan for them.

4. Work experience

Newest job first. Under each one, add 2 to 4 short lines starting with a doing word: “Served 200+ customers a day”, “Trained three new staff”. Numbers help. Short jobs, casual work and family business count.

Gaps are normal. If you were caring for family, studying, recovering, volunteering or job hunting, you can say so in one line, or leave it for the interview. You never have to explain health details.

5. Education and training

Newest first. Include short courses and certificates (TAFE, online courses, a First Aid certificate). If you finished school recently, add your school and the year you finished.

6. Volunteering and other experience

Volunteering, community work, sport and helping out in a family business all show real skills. Treat them like jobs: role, organisation, dates and what you did.

7. Licences and checks

Common ones employers look for: driver licence (and if you have a car), Working with Children Check, police check, RSA, RSG, White Card, First Aid, forklift licence.

8. Referees

Most Australian resumes say “Referees available on request”. Ask your referees first, and only share their details when an employer asks.

Resume questions

What format do Australian employers expect?

Two pages is the usual length (one is fine if you're starting out). Your name and contact details at the top, a short summary, then skills, work history (newest first), education and licences. No photo, no date of birth, and referees “available on request”.

I've never had a job. What do I put?

Lead with your skills and summary, then education, volunteering, school leadership, sport, babysitting, helping in a family business, or anything where you turned up and did the work. Employers hiring for first jobs look for reliability and attitude more than experience.

Is it really free? Where does my information go?

It's free, with no sign-up and no ads. The resume is built inside your browser, so we never see what you type. We only count page visits.

Should I change my resume for each job?

Yes, a little. Keep one main version, then tweak the summary and skills to match the words in each job ad.

Can someone help me with my job search?
